Rolly Derby International!

It was a double header at the Hanger on Saturday nite as TORD team Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, or D-VAS



hosted Nickel City Roller Derby team Sister Slag.



The D-vas had some prior history with Tord, but was rebuilding as a team, much like the new Sudbury team.

Both Jammers were fighting hard for the points,



while the refs kept a close eye on all the action.



the first half was a close one, but by the end of the second, the D-VAS pulled ahead for a 71 to 38 win.

Next up was the Killamazoo Derby Darlins from Michigan





vs the TORD Allstar team, CN Power!

This was an international event, with the DD's coming up from Michigan to battle the Tord all stars.

CN Power includes players like Land Shark, a super fast jammer.
Here she is breaking her way through the pack for points!



and Defecaitlin, who was also a fast mover on the track!



The Tord Juniors were on hand to sing the Canadian anthem



While Penny Whistler prepared for the match!



While the scoreboard quckly showed that CN Power was dominating the event, there were still girls flying across the track!









In the end, CN Power dominted 197 to 35 over the DD's, but as always with Derby, after a hard fought battle, both teams celebrated together. Here, the Michigan team had the CN Power girls pose with a team mascot,





before some joined the CN Power team for a team picture!

Tord championship

After a very physical game, here are your 2010 Toronto Roller Derby Champions, the Gore Gore Rollergirls!



Congratulations to both teams for a great game!

The action started early in the day, with both teams getting on the track for both practice,












and some heavy duty stretching!



As it was championship nite, the sold out event crowd was lined up outside the door.




Those who felt unlucky enough to have tickets were still in luck, in that it was announced that Rogers Cable was on hand to film the entire event. It will be shown on Dec 4, 2010.

The intro's were made, with the Gore Gore Rollergirls and the Chick Ahoy teams coming onto the track.






Then with the stands packed full, the game began.





















After the hard game, the Gore Gore Rollergirls took the win.





And as the winner of the 2010 Championship, the Gore Gore girls took the "BOOT"


for another year!



As always, this is a hard fought game, but both teams have a genuine friendship with the other teams, so they got together for a team photo, both sharing in the game victory!



And like any good sport, there was great interaction between the teams and the fans, which will only grow the sport even more!

tord semi finals - part 1

I've enjoyed attending the Toronto Roller Derby games in the past, held at the Hanger, and this saturday nite was no different.
These are ladies dedicated to the action of the flat track roller derby, and they put a great amount of effort into it, and at the end, really seem to be enjoying themselves.

This semi final race had the Death Track Dolls









competing against Chicks Ahoy







for the last space in the final event, to be held on November 13.

Before the event started, there was a 10 min skate-athon for the Junior girls, a division the league has started to ensure there will be future skaters in the upcoming years.

and as there is so much action on the track, there are many, both on the inside and outside of the track.

here are the two who watch each of the teams jammers during the game.



Unforunately, I did not see my favourite ref there, Nicki Nine Lives:(



Anyone know if she is still playing in the league??


And then the action starts, with both teams battling on the track to get as many points as possible in a effort to make it to the finals!





















in the end the Chicks were able to get and hold a lead to win the game, although as time ran out, the Dolls made a hard effort to get

I leave it to you to check out the rules yourself, but in general, its the job of the two teams' Jammers to pass as many of the other team as they can. The more they pass, the more points they get back into the game, but time ran out.

And this is one of the best things about the sport. At the end of every game, the teams circle the track and congratulate themselves, and the other team.







As you can see, this is not the typicaly "fake handshake" you see in other sports, these girls really do appreciate the great game they have had, and the players, both their own and the opposing team, share that feeling.
